“…what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Tim 2:2)
Every Christian is a minister, and we desire to make ministry training a component of everything that we do. We envision a whole church equipped to prayerfully proclaim the Word (Eph 4:11-12).

Additionally, we’re working to invest in the next generation of preachers, elders, missionaries and leaders among us. Here’s some of the ways we’re doing that:

This weekly meeting happens on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 at the church building. We take the first half to review the previous week’s sermon, discussing its development and delivery, and offering constructive evaluation.

In the next half, the preacher will walk the group through his draft outline for the next week’s sermon, taking appropriate time to discuss each portion of the message. He’ll get to test out some of the big ideas, field questions on exegetical issues, and brainstorm ideas for potential illustrations or applications. Along the way, the group will learn about preaching philosophy and practice as they work out how the big ideas apply in real life.

You don’t need to commit to every week—come when you’re able. The following expectations will apply to these workshops:

  • Everyone will have listened to or read the previous week’s sermon.
  • In addition, at least a few minutes should be taken beforehand to read and think about the following week’s sermon passage. (In most cases, this will simply be the next passage in the book being preached.)
  • We’re open those from other churches to attend, but ask that they discuss this with their leadership to make sure they’re in support of their participation.
  • Constructive criticism of sermon content and delivery is an important part of our time together. At the same time, the philosophy of expositional preaching embraced at Emmanuel is not up for debate. We are, however, happy to explain our approach to anyone who would like to learn more.
  • We’re unashamedly complementarian. While we believe in equipping women to teach the Bible in biblically appropriate contexts, these workshops are laser-focused on training men to preach.
